Most daily activities carried out by human is when we’re at home. These various activities certainly also affect household expenditure, namely household waste.
Household waste has a significant influence on total waste in Indonesia. In fact, most of the waste in Indonesia comes from households (48%), markets (24%), and commercial areas (9%). In addition, public awareness of the reduction of household waste is still low. Research from the Katadata Insight Center (KIC) states that 50.8% of households do not separate waste. One of the main factors is that the public does not want to be bothered to sort through garbage.
Reducing household waste is one step to reduce the effects of global warming. Because the garbage and waste that we produce will go down to the disposal process, namely landfill and burning. Both are very bad for the earth and the environment. Therefore, reducing waste is also one step to start an eco-friendly life.
What are the simple steps you can do to reduce household waste?
Food Preparation
Maybe you often hear this as the Meal Plan. The purpose of preparing food dishes in batches is so that we can measure how much food that needs to be consumed in a certain amount of time. This can also minimize the presence of excess food scraps that will later become waste.
Recycling Used Goods
This method is one of the actions that will always arise when discussing waste. Recycling used goods is one of the influential ways to reduce household waste. Because the items to be recycled are usually items that are difficult to decompose, such as plastic and cans. Therefore, recycling is one of the most effective ways.
Repair, Not Replace
Usually, when things are broken or damaged, people toss them out. You can try fixing it first instead of immediately throwing it away. The things that you throw away will accumulate the amount of waste. If you’re willing to spend some time, some stuff can be easily fixed without having to replace it with a new one.
Do not use goods made of plastic
Plastic goods have been proven difficult to decompose. In addition, plastic waste will usually ended up in the sea, making it dangerous for the marine ecosystem. You can start to reduce the use of plastic in daily activities at home. For example, don’t plastic bottles for drinking, don’t use plastic bags when shopping, and avoid containers made of plastic.
Get Rid of Disposable Items
If you’ve ever hosted a dinner party at your house, you would know what disposable items means. Disposable items are very practical when used in large scale events. But, of course, these items are not very good if used at home, because it can add to the pile of household waste. Another excellent alternative that can be used is a container made of glass so that it can be used many times.
